Paul On Baptism -tmp(1 Cor 1:14-18)

After looking at baptism as used in the Peter passage we
could rule out the idea that Peter is making a statement about salvation and
the nature of water.
Of course, we could easily see how pulling something out
of context can establish a false doctrine (baptising saves, baptising
the dead, or infants). But, before I move onto those types of things
I want to look at something Paul said regarding baptism which shouldn’t
minimize the mandate but it should, in the very least, put it in its
proper
perspective.

Commenting and Emoticonned

For the near future, don’t bother using emoticons when commenting. My
commenting system, though much improved, has a serious flaw which
deletes everything past the emoticon. I’m not sure if it does the same
with quotes and such. You will note what is being deleted when you
submit the comment and go to the second screen and you see copy from
your post repeated beneath the "submit" button. Very upsetting.

Ramblin’ and Aliens -tmp(WBT)

So I think I’m just gonna ramble a bit, just touching here
and there while giving some updates in some areas, linking to other sites in
others and perhaps touching on Star Wars or Aliens while I’m at it. I’m sure my family
will appreciate the update, anyway.

Uplook Fridays:1 Corinthians 11:24

It is an astonishing thing that we who have been
redeemed need a reminder of our Lord’s death on the cross. Yet it is so! If we
search our hearts and examine our ways, we shall find it is easy to forget. Our
Lord, who knows well the weakness and treachery of our human hearts, has made
provision for us to be constantly reminded. Thus He has established the memorial
feast with this intent, “This do in
remembrance of Me
.”

If you remember a commenter stated that water baptism is
necessary for salvation. It seems that by salvation he meant both justification
and regeneration in that he believed water baptism was (a) necessary for the
forgiveness of sins and (b) that you are raised to life by means of water baptism.
We’ve worked our way through several baptismal accounts and have been eroding
at his foundation (simultaneously addressing some other baptismal concerns and
God-willing reflecting a Bible based study). At this point though my commenter
brought up the (in)famous 1 Peter text as undeniable proof of baptism that
saves us.

So after I confessed to not particularly liking
the ESV and favoring my
NASB anyday over it I started to wonder: Why is it that so many people
online seem to be embracing it anyway? I mean, one person seems to
think my Bible preference is a "Satanic Roman Catholic perverted piece of garbage " while others think only the KJV
is perfect.

Russ On Baptism

Last night our church baptized over 20 people [This posted on Tuesday but brother Russ is referring to Sunday night.-rey].
Embarrassingly, I have not been keeping up with Rey’s series on baptism, so I’m
not sure whether he has touched on this. However, I came away from this service
with a couple of thoughts that might contribute to what he is saying:

Patience in Work -tmp(James 5:7-20)

Last time I touched the book of James I was taking a small
look at personal patience (or perseverance) and the joy a believer can have in
trials. Today I’d like to look at corporate patience in the work of
the Lord and what that has to do with the individual.

Russ on Encouraging Pastors

Rey pointed me to a post at The Happy Husband that is rather
interesting. How to minister to your minister….that’s actually a harder
question than many may think. First, and probably foremost, because most of the
pastors that I’m acquainted with would have a hard time telling people what
would be encouraging to them. Its not that we don’t need encouragement nor that
it doesn’t feel good to us to be lifted up, but I think that many of us are
sensitive to the fact that we don’t want to manipulate the feelings of those
that God has given us in order to bring glory to us. It’s a fine line that a
pastor walks – being human and needing support and yet wanting all the glory to
go to God. So, if you go to your pastor to ask him (I’m going to use the
masculine throughout this whole post since something like over 90% of pastors
are men…realizing that some of the readers may have women pastors – its more
because I have a terrible habit of not matching up my pronouns and plurality
:)…if you go to your pastor and ask him how you can encourage him, don’t expect
a very detailed listing – he’ll probably never tell you what would really water
his heart.

Femme Fatales and Formidable Females

MCF is throwing another blog party and since I haven’t
participated in any for quite a while I decided to bring another bit of my own
stuff. I will surely be late and (once again) no one will bother tasting
it—much less look at it—but so what. I’ll go, wanna join me?

Sy Asks About Jesus

I couldn’t believe it when my wife told me but I was still
touched. Normally he looks at a story books re-telling the life of Jesus and
points out key features…but when he gets to the cross he asks about Jesus’
booboos.
