Reflecting On Reformation Day

Traditionally, on October 31st, 1517 Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Castle Church in Wittenberg—I guess that was his blog. The document is concerned with the authority of the pope in regard to indulgences and most of us Protestant Children of the Reformation would look back at the thing with a quizzical raised eyebrow—it means little to us today. I and countless believers who hold to the traditions shouted from barrack-tops are grateful for the unearthed truths and even repeat the Sola-statements: By Grace Alone, by Faith Alone, by Scripture Alone, by Christ alone, Glory to only God. But do we remember the price?

Should A Christian Observe Halloween?

Years ago someone from my old church handed me a Chick tract on the “true meaning” of Halloween; it scared me (and it scared Joe Carter—let him link to it). Mind you, I saw The Exorcist when I was eight and the Lord saved me two weeks later—even so, Chick scared me. But as I grew older I came to see that many of the things Chick said were not sound and with Halloween specifically I had to draw (sorry) my own conclusions. After all, if I was to be a husband and a father I would have to have some solid convictions to share with the family. So should a Christian observe Halloween?

Jesus Christ Our Lord is Mediator

Jesus Christ is the only mediator, the one who lays a hand on each side ({{Job 9:33}}), between God and Man ({{1 Tim 2:5}}), mediating a better covenant than that found in the Law ({{Heb 8:6}}; {{Heb 12:24}}) which was mediated by Moses ({{Gal 3:19}}; {{Heb. 3:2?5}}). He has attained this exalted position by means of His full status as man ({{Heb. 2:17, 18; 4:15, 16}}), His authority by the Father ({{Matt. 28:18}}; {{John 5:22-27}}) and His atonement ({{Eph 2:13-18}}; {{Heb 9:15}}).

Of course, more can be inferred by His role as mediator throughout Scripture (as in his priestly work, his propitiatory work, his work in eternity past and the future glory)but I sought to look only at the direct references to his role as Mediator.

Becoming All Things To All Men (1 Cor 9)

In my experience urban Teens have usually appealed to 1 Corinthians 9 for supporting the way they dress, act and use modern vernacular: Apparently adults are thinking the same thing about how to approach society in general. “To preach the gospel to those bar hoppers—I have to go to the bar and have a drink with them!” Centurion’s post on TeamPyro that circumstantially deals with Driscoll but really is concerned with the vehicle for the Gospel sparked this post so I wanted to look at this: Does Paul’s statement of becoming all things to all people mean becoming just like them so that we can preach to them?

Noah and the Genesis 6-9 Story

The Voice completely changed Noah’s life. One moment he’s heading to market the next God is telling him that everything is about to die.

Jesus Christ Our Lord is King

The King was foretold ({{Num 24:17}}; {{Ps 2:6; 45:1-17}}; {{Isa 9:7}}; {{Jer 23:5}}; {{Mic 5:2}}) and is demarcated as glorious ({{Ps 24:7-10}}; {{1 Cor 2:8}}), supreme ({{Ps 89:27}}; {{Rev 1:5; 19:16}}), sits on the throne of God ({{Rev 3:21}}) and to sit on the throne of David (Isa 9:7; {{Eze 37:24,25}}; {{Luke 1:32}}; {{Acts 2:20}}) as King of Zion ({{Isa 52:7}}; {{Zech 9:9}}; {{Mt 21:5}}; {{John 12:12-15}}).

Richard Dawkins: The God Shaped Hole

“Sexual abuse is disgusting, but it’s not as harmful as the grievous mental harm of bringing children up Catholic in the first place.” I’ve copied the rest of the article below to save it in case it disappears. (Originally posted here and HT to Jeremy).

In the
first of Jehovah’s messages through Jeremiah, the tender-hearted
prophet, and recorded in Jeremiah 2, there are a number of touching
questions: “What is wrong in Me?” (v. 5); “Why not inquire of Me?” (v.
6); “The priests ignore Me, why?” (v. 8); “Is there any nation so
whimsical as you?” (v. 11); “Why do you act as a spoiled servant?” (v.
14); “Why have you forsaken Me?” (v. 17); “Why do you hanker after
Egypt?” (v. 18), etc. The whole of the message is a series of
challenging and searching queries. But surely none are so pointed and
full of meaning as “Have I become a wilderness unto Israel?” (v. 31).
The Lord a wilderness to His redeemed ones?

ESV Wife and HCSB Hebrews

In my drawn out process of looking over Bibles I recently noticed two things worth mentioning. This afternoon I read through Hebrews in the HCSB and it was fantastic. The language was clear and tied the thoughtflow of the book together quite nicely (if you’ve ever slogged through the book with the NASB–my favorite translation–you?ll appreciate it). Yesterday I went through 1st Corinthians with the ESV and wondered why they chose “wife” in 1 Corinthians 11 instead of “woman” (which most other versions use)? Lastly this passage from Titus makes me laugh in any version: “One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: ‘Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.’ He has surely told the truth!” (TNIV) A Cretan saying “Cretans are always liars.” And Paul says “That Cretan didn’t lie–he told the truth!!” I guess it gives me the geeky-giggles.

Mohler (HT: Tim–>Links Below) tells parents to be careful with television and children by first showing an excerpt from recent research showing a statistical relationship with autism and television viewing. People, don’t get me wrong—kids shouldn’t be spending hours in front of the TV, but honestly—Christians, just because you read a bit of research don’t immediately wave it as your banner!

Jesus Christ Our Lord is God Incarnate

Jesus Christ is the promised, beloved son ({{John 3:16}}; {{1 Jn 4:9}}) who will have the authority on His shoulders and He is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace ({{Is 9:6}}). As the Son of God, He has spoken ({{Heb 1:1}}) and has given understanding so that we may know Him who is true?this is the true God and eternal life ({{1 John 5:20}}) as spoken of in the Old Testament ({{Jer 10:10}}). As such He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords ({{Rev 1:5, 17:14}}) something only designated for God ({{Is 6:1-3}}).

Genesis: Chapter Divisions

Wanted to put my arbitrary outline of the Book of Genesis with basic divisions. It’s mostly divided by thought flow (stories), patterns (repeated events) and a generic structural division based on Genealogies or Generations. I pray it’s useful

Protestant denominations are generally divided over creedal lines (since the disagreement over practical issues?sprinkling versus immersion?is improvable and disagreement over theological issues is very often a matter of degree: ie; how involved is the Holy Spirit in worship might reflect more in worship style than a Bible to Bible Cage-Match).
