One thought I had as I read your post, that I have not thought of much before is that, David and the people during his time had to have thought about the fact that at face value the Abrahamic Covenant had not been fulfilled. They had to have suspected that there was more going on. 

So... when they see God make the Davidic Covenant, they had to suspect that there will be a lot more to it than meets the eye.
