On a hill outside of Jerusalem they crucified Him. Not satisfied with His death, some one even complain about the words on Jesus’ cross “This is Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews”. Others would stand by sneering that “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.” (Luke 23:35). The soldiers would mock Him. Even the criminals on the crosses next to Him would taunt Him. But the Lord didn’t respond to the taunts of men.<\/p>\n

As he?s pinned to the cross, He prays to God asking that the Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing (Luke 23:34)<\/p>\n

As he’s reviled by a criminal, one repents and He tells him “Truly I say to you. Today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)<\/p>\n

As the soldiers divided His clothes, Jesus looked down to His mother and the disciple He loved and said “Woman, behold your son.” To the disciple “Behold your mother” There, dying on the cross and concerned with the keeping of His mother according to the flesh. (John 19:25-27)<\/p>\n

From 9 am to 12 pm it was dark–the very brightness of God’s glory was being judged. One wonders if a single star shone that day. Near the end of this darkness, the Lord cries out “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?” (Matt 27:46)<\/p>\n

He asked for a drink, not for His own need?but to fulfill the Scriptures. (John 19:28)<\/p>\n

We hear Jesus crying out “Father, Into your hands I commit My spirit!” (Luke 23:46)<\/p>\n

He said “It is finished!” and gave up His spirit and died. (John 19:30)<\/p>\n

Seven sayings and not one of them out of selfish intent or setting the balance straight. Two of them are for sinners, one is for His earthly family, one is in response to God’s wrath, two are to fulfill scripture and two are directly to the Father. Those hushed words “It is finished” reverberates through time telling us of God’s satisfaction with the sacrifice and the Son?s obedience fulfilled.<\/p>\n
