They are in no way<br \/>\nfleshed out but I put them up in an effort to update them as I go<br \/>\nalong. That being said, the HTML may be a bit fuzzy and there may be<br \/>\nother posts that come out added to this. It will not preempt my Romans<br \/>\nseries but it will reinforce some of the things I&#8217;ll be saying when I<br \/>\nget to Romans 14.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Book of Reconciliation of People with God<br \/>\nGod&rsquo;s Word is Good: From the creation of the heavens and the<br \/>\nearth to the saving of Jacob, his family and the nations, God&rsquo;s word continues<br \/>\nto stand proving to be Good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sub-theme:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Creation of God and how he deals with it<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God<br \/>\n     makes promises of setting things in order and will make sure such promises<br \/>\n     are kept from the Fall to the Saving of the Seed by Joseph<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Calling out of a People<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The<br \/>\n     Fall of Man<\/li>\n<li>The<br \/>\n     Wickedness of Man<\/li>\n<li>The<br \/>\n     Setting Apart for blessing<\/li>\n<li>The<br \/>\n     Keeping the promise for blessing <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Living God reveals Himself<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Structure:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Thematic Structure consists of almost a<br \/>\ncompartmentalization process from the overall picture to the specific box of<br \/>\nthe Israelites and their saving from famine by Joseph. The Fall of Man was<br \/>\nsomething that affected all of mankind and was apparent in the Wickedness of<br \/>\nMan in Gen 6. The issuing out of an edict for man to judge wickedness was only<br \/>\nsupplanted by Man making a great name for themselves and subsequent confusion. But<br \/>\nin each of these events, there was a promise. In the garden a promise of the<br \/>\nseed of women crushing the serpent&rsquo;s head, to Noah a promise of destruction no<br \/>\nmore by water, to Abraham a promise of blessing to himself and all the nations<br \/>\nthrough himself and yet a promise of judgments on wickedness by the very distant<br \/>\nsmokes of destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The promise of the land,<br \/>\ncompartmentalized down to Isaac instead of Man&rsquo;s Provision in Ishmael and<br \/>\nfurther by God&rsquo;s Choosing of Jacob (the younger) instead of Esau. Finally, the<br \/>\ntribes are preserved by Joseph in the close of the book, set apart from the<br \/>\nEgyptians and multiplying.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&rsquo;t specifically define the structure but the way<br \/>\nthe structure progresses. The book can actually be divided in two from chapters<br \/>\n1-11 then 12 onwards; the first section dealing with The Creation of Man and<br \/>\nthe second The Calling of a People. The first section consists of three major<br \/>\nmovements summarized in the creation headers (1:1; 2:4 and 5:1) while the<br \/>\nsecond section consists of three major movements summarized in the patriarchal<br \/>\nheaders referent to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Each of the sections have a major<br \/>\ncalamity which can spell an end to some aspect of God&rsquo;s revelatory word. In<br \/>\nsection 1 God&rsquo;s Word creates and with His Word He saves a man to preserve the<br \/>\ncreation: Noah. In section 2 God&rsquo;s Word calls out Abraham and with His Will He<br \/>\noverrules Joseph&rsquo;s situation so as to save Joseph&rsquo;s family and the nations. The<br \/>\nNoahic story is part of the greater story of the Generations Of Men while the<br \/>\nJoseph story is part of the greater story of the Generations of Israel. <\/p>\n<p>So technically we can say the Structure of the Book is<br \/>\ndefined by the differentiation of World vs. A People divided at 11:27. My chart<br \/>\nwould specify this as the Found of the World vs. The Founding of A People. This<br \/>\nof course can also show further progress by seeing the element of a genealogy<br \/>\nwhich may be viewed as a structure or at the very least, a pattern that hints<br \/>\nat the structure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe setting of the book starts at the Garden and moves out<br \/>\nto the World and progressively centralized in Canaan, only ending in Egypt with a promise still awaiting<br \/>\nfulfillment&hellip;to acquire the land<br \/>\n of Canaan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Patterns:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Generations&mdash;<\/em><br \/>\n(This may also attest to the Structure) Generational lines: Heavens<br \/>\nand Earth (2:4); Adam (5:1); Noah (6:9); Shem, Ham and Japheth (10:1); Shem<br \/>\n(11:10); Terah (11:27); Ishmael (25:12); Isaac (25:19); Esau (36:1 and 9) and Jacob<br \/>\n(37:2).<\/p>\n<p>The Generational patterns also seem to pair off. Heavens-Earth<br \/>\nand Adam; Noah and Shem, Ham, Japeth; Shem and Terah; Ishamael and Isaac; Esau<br \/>\nand Jacob. This pattern leads me to wonder if the structural break in Genesis<br \/>\nis actually Gen 11:10. In light of the stories being told there&rsquo;s almost a<br \/>\nchiastic structure to the generations meeting up at that point. Heavens and<br \/>\nEarth were cursed but Adam survived. Noah was shamed but Shem, Ham and Japheth<br \/>\nwent on. 11:10 switches that about putting the line that is not the called line<br \/>\nup front. Shem&rsquo;s line is ends in ambiguity but through Terah comes Abraham; Ishmael<br \/>\nis sent out as a wild man while Isaac remains; Esau will bow to Jacob (although<br \/>\nwe don&rsquo;t see it in this book) and eventually leaves the land to Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are other genealogies mentioned but not<br \/>\nwith the distinctive character of &ldquo;the record of the generations of&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><em>Murder&mdash;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cain and the murder of Abel<\/p>\n<p>Done out of Jealousy<\/p>\n<p>One was doing it his way the other was doing it God&rsquo;s way<\/p>\n<p>Punished by cursing and no one can touch him<\/p>\n<p>Indicative of the fall of man<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lamech and the murder of a young man<\/p>\n<p>Done for no stated reason<\/p>\n<p>Completely situated in his own self-defined morality outside<br \/>\nof God&rsquo;s way<\/p>\n<p>Justification that no one can touch him<\/p>\n<p>Indicative of the wickedness of man (He wrote a poem about<br \/>\nit)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Relationships&mdash;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>God and Adam n&rsquo; Eve vs. Satan and Adam n&rsquo; Eve<\/p>\n<p>Truth vs. Lying<\/p>\n<p>Life vs. Death<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Noah vs. the People<\/p>\n<p>Righteous vs. Wickedness Continually<\/p>\n<p>Belief vs. Unbelief<\/p>\n<p>Salvation vs. Death<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>God vs. the Babylonians<\/p>\n<p>Down vs. Building Up<\/p>\n<p>Abram vs. His Family<\/p>\n<p>Called vs. Not-called<\/p>\n<p>Covenant vs. Non-Covenant<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Sarah vs. Haggai<\/p>\n<p>Freewoman vs. Bondwoman<\/p>\n<p>Barren\/Dead Womb vs. Fertile\/Living womb<\/p>\n<p>Child of Promise vs. Child of Flesh<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Isaac vs. Ishmael<\/p>\n<p>Young vs. Old<\/p>\n<p>Promised vs. Not-Promised<\/p>\n<p>Berated vs. Wild Man<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lot vs. Sodom<\/p>\n<p>Upright vs. Proud n&rsquo; Perverse<\/p>\n<p>Life vs. Death<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Jacob vs. Esau<\/p>\n<p>Promised higher position vs. lower position<\/p>\n<p>Dwelled in the Tents vs. Hunted in the Field<\/p>\n<p>Deceiver vs. Disparager <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Jacob vs. Laban<\/p>\n<p>Liar vs. Dishonorable<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Joseph vs. His brothers<\/p>\n<p>Blessing for all<\/p>\n<p>Provider vs. Provision for<\/p>\n<p>Exalted position vs. Lowered position<\/p>\n<p>Love vs. Jealousy<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Marriages&mdash;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Adam and Even<\/p>\n<p>Lied to by the serpent <\/p>\n<p>Eve&rsquo;s children would eventually all die&mdash;(The Flood)<\/p>\n<p>Eve&rsquo;s promise as mother encompassed by a younger son&mdash;Seth<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Abraham and Sarah<\/p>\n<p>Lied when potential problems would come instead on relying<br \/>\non God<\/p>\n<p>Sarah was barren and at the appointed time her womb was<br \/>\nopened<\/p>\n<p>The Promise came through a specific child&mdash;Isaac<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Isaac and Rebekah<\/p>\n<p>Lied when potential problems would come (same king<br \/>\nAbimelech, but no pharaoh) instead of relying on God<\/p>\n<p>Rebekah was barren until Isaac prayed that her womb would be<br \/>\nopened<\/p>\n<p>The Promise came through a specific child&mdash;Jacob<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Jacob and Rachel, Leah, Kilbah and Bizpah<\/p>\n<p>Lied to when a promise came to get a wife<\/p>\n<p>Rebekah was barren and Leah bore children. Rebekah gave her<br \/>\nhandmaiden and Leah did likewise.
