The labels which I will be<br \/>\nusing are placed in an effort to categorize the interpretation not to refer to<br \/>\nany of them pejoratively. Note that there may be some intermingling of these categories<br \/>\nbut this post isn&#8217;t concerned with that. Neither is this post concerned with<br \/>\nany theological framework that may be influencing the interpretation. My sole<br \/>\npurpose is to see if either of the interpretations handles the material<br \/>\ncorrectly and if it supports the subsequent thesis.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \t<em><br \/>\nJust as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son<br \/>\nof Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal<br \/>\nlife. text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><em><span>d.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/em><!--[endif]--><em>Therefore nothing.<br \/>\nThis is a fact.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Therefore the normal reading of the verse draws key<br \/>\ninformation from the following parts of the verses (1) The Son of Man lifted up,<br \/>\n(2) God so loved the world, (3) Death, (4) Belief and Eternal Life<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <strong><br \/>\nWhat is the Analysis of the Focal Points<\/strong><br \/>\nA play by play of exegesis would bloat this post so I&#8217;ll<br \/>\nhone in on those points mentioned in the previous paragraph. Since point 2 (God<br \/>\nso loved the world) might be dependant on what the other statements mean, I<br \/>\nwill save that to last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <em><br \/>\nThe Son of Man Lifted Up<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>1)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Seems<br \/>\nto read as a metaphor: Christ is lifted up like Moses<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>2)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Verse<br \/>\n14 focuses first on Moses actively lifting the serpent then on Christ passively<br \/>\nbeing lifted. By swapping it and highlighting the way the lifting up is being<br \/>\ndone (again, active vs. passive) we must wonder about the author&#8217;s intent<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>3)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Verse<br \/>\n15 culminates in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153eternal life\u00e2\u20ac\u009d via belief and verse 16 culminates in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153eternal<br \/>\nlife\u00e2\u20ac\u009d via belief. Verse 15 is still part of the original thought of Verse 14<br \/>\nyet in verse 16 we have God actively giving the Son with no mention of the<br \/>\nSon&#8217;s activity at that giving indicating multiple comparisons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>4)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Multiple<br \/>\ncomparisons with a metaphor is more the language of analogy<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>5)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->As<br \/>\nan analogy, Jesus is comparing two separate events by having the listener (Reader<br \/>\nor Nicodemus) look at the analogy details. Why use an analogy: the original<br \/>\nquestion stands (outside the scope of the post but have to refer to it: How can<br \/>\na man be born again so as to enter the kingdom of God\u00e2\u20ac\u201dhow can these things be?)<br \/>\ntherefore a problem solving method is offered. Moses actively lifted the<br \/>\nSerpent as God actively gave the Son. The Serpent didn&#8217;t lift itself just as<br \/>\nthe Son didn&#8217;t lift Himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <em><br \/>\nDeath<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>1)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The<br \/>\ndeath statement resides in part B of a probable analogy. If it is an analogy<br \/>\nthere should be a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153death\u00e2\u20ac\u009d statement in part A<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>2)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Moses<br \/>\nlifted the Serpent in the Wilderness alone does not have a death statement<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>3)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Therefore<br \/>\neither Moses lifting the Serpent in the Wilderness isn&#8217;t an analogy or Jesus is<br \/>\nasking the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153listening\u00e2\u20ac\u009d party to provide the missing parts of the analogy<br \/>\n(Numbers 21:4-8)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>a.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The<br \/>\npeople all sinned<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>b.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->God<br \/>\nsent poisonous snakes to bite the people<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>c.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Many<br \/>\ndied<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>d.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The<br \/>\npeople needed salvation from death<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>e.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Some<br \/>\nof the people asked for intervention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>f.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->God<br \/>\nhad Moses build a Bronze Serpent that anyone who was bitten and looked could<br \/>\nlive<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>g.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Moses<br \/>\nlifted the Serpent in the Wilderness<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>h.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Those<br \/>\nwho looked, lived; presumably those who didn&#8217;t look died.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>4)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Jesus&#8217;<br \/>\nreference contains a death statement that reinforces the analogy. Death in Part<br \/>\nA of the analogy was a physical death from poison coursing through the veins.<br \/>\nDeath in Part B of the analogy is also a death that is coming upon those who<br \/>\nneed a cure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <em><br \/>\nBelief and Eternal Life<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>1)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Seeing<br \/>\nthat there are multiple points of convergence within the analogous statement we<br \/>\nwould look for the same regarding \u00e2\u20ac\u0153belief and eternal life\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>2)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->In<br \/>\nthe Serpent situation there was no mention of belief only of people asking for<br \/>\nintervention and looking after they were bit<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>3)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->In<br \/>\nthe Serpent situation there was no mention of eternal life only people living<br \/>\nafter looking at the Serpent<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>4)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Since<br \/>\nthe Serpent appears to be pivotal in this situation (as the Son of Man is in<br \/>\nthe later argument) it can not refer to the people requesting intervention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>5)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Therefore<br \/>\nthe analogy is expansive in Part B (as many analogies are).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>a.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Savior<br \/>\nMoses lifted a bronze item as the Savior God actively gave the Son of man to be<br \/>\nlifted up. The passive Serpent was lifted up like the Living Son of Man is<br \/>\npassive in his being given. Death came to those in the wilderness from death in<br \/>\ntheir veins just as death is coming for all those who have death coursing in<br \/>\ntheir veins. The ones who looked on the Serpent lived, the ones who believe on<br \/>\nthe Son lived eternally. The ones who looked on the Serpent trusted that God&#8217;s<br \/>\nprovision was what would ensure life and the ones who believe are the ones who<br \/>\ntrust that God&#8217;s provision would ensure eternal life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>6)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Therefore<br \/>\nbelief in the Son resulting in eternal life is being compared to seeing the<br \/>\nserpent as the only hope resulting in physical life. Therefore some people will<br \/>\ndefinitely live eternally and others will die. Some will rely on the Son and<br \/>\nothers will not\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthere is no mention here of how they will rely although in the<br \/>\nMoses situation it seems to imply that people could rely on the serpent simply<br \/>\nby turning and looking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <em><br \/>\nGod so loved the World<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>1)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The<br \/>\noriginal reads \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In this manner God loved the world\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. We&#8217;ve already established<br \/>\nthat this is all occurring in the framework of an analogy so then \u00e2\u20ac\u0153God so loved<br \/>\nthe world\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In this manner God loved the world\u00e2\u20ac\u009d still fits within the<br \/>\ncomparison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <strong><br \/>\nHow does this view compare with the others?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.25in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>1)<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->For<br \/>\nthe sake of categorization I&#8217;ll call this the Literary view simply because of<br \/>\nfocus on a literary model (the analogy).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>a.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Just<br \/>\nas Moses did this with the Serpent in this situation resulting in life and not<br \/>\ndeath for those who looked; so God did with His Son in this situation resulting<br \/>\nin eternal life and not death for those who believe<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>b.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->In<br \/>\nthis way God loved the world introduces a continuation of the analogy and not a<br \/>\nstatement of the expanse of God&#8217;s love.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span>c.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">       <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Death<br \/>\nis likened to that in Numbers (so that means at least physical) but is being used as a foil to the greatness of<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153eternal life\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Although I think all the views properly touch on some of the<br \/>\ncorrect data, I do not think that they are completely sound. And in each case,<br \/>\nthe appeal (or lack of appeal) be it to everyone, a community or no-one doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\nseem to follow from the discussion in John 3 and seems to draw for information<br \/>\noutside of the thought-flow of that chapter.The Flattening view is correct in that<br \/>\nthose who have X have Y but have an odd position when they see no higher<br \/>\npurpose for the transmission of the information (to Nicodemus and to ourselves)<br \/>\nthan stating a fact of how things work. If so, why bother using an analogy? The<br \/>\nRestricting view also has to ask itself why the author decided to include this<br \/>\nextremely restrictive discussion in his overall presentation of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that you may<br \/>\nbelieve\u00e2\u20ac\u009d without a modifier like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Israelites\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153of the Church\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The Expanded<br \/>\nView also faces some difficulties when it looks at the complexities of the<br \/>\ndiscussion. <span> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \t<em><br \/>\nJust as Moses actively lifted the Serpent in the desert so<br \/>\nthen the Son of Man must be lifted up in order that any person that relies in<br \/>\nHim will have eternal life.
