{"id":4,"date":"2004-11-23T19:19:04","date_gmt":"2004-11-24T00:19:04","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"romans-chapter-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biblearchive.com\/blog\/romans-chapter-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Romans Chapter 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Romans Chapter 1<br \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>1.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Introduction<\/b><\/p>\n<p>a.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>The book of Romans has been called The Gospel according to Paul<\/p>\n<p>b.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Romans<br \/>\n  uses a question\/answer format which attacks and defends some very key points<\/p>\n<p>1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Not<br \/>\n  that I will be presenting the book of Romans as an Apologetic defense, but more<br \/>\n  as God?s Case Defended and Man?s Place Confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Showing<br \/>\n  that God is truth and all men are liars (Rom 3:4)<\/p>\n<p>c.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>Covers a pretty full spectrum<\/p>\n<p>1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>From<br \/>\n  the utter depravity of debased man to the very glory of God.<\/p>\n<p>d.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>This<br \/>\n  was a letter which Paul wrote to the Romans (not a specific church) <\/p>\n<p>1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>He<br \/>\n  yearns to visit the Romans (1:10) so that they can share in the imparting of<br \/>\n  God?s spiritual gifts (1:11, 12, 13)<\/p>\n<p><span\nstyle='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>The Romans would benefit from the God-sent Apostle (sent one?ambassador)<br \/>\n  to the Gentiles speaking to them<\/p>\n<p><span\nstyle='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>Paul would get some spiritual gift from the Romans themselves as he is<br \/>\n  there.<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Note that the Gospel<br \/>\n  has broken the political land boundaries and like a fire has swept into Rome<br \/>\n  and across the known world for even Paul has heard of the tremendous faith of<br \/>\n  the Roman Believers (1:8)<\/p>\n<p>e.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>Why Did Paul ?write? the letter?<\/p>\n<p>1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Tertius<br \/>\n  did the writing?Paul the dictating (16:22) <\/p>\n<p>2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>He<br \/>\n  planned to visit the Romans on his way to Spain and was letting them know (1:9-13;<br \/>\n  15:22-29)<\/p>\n<p> a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>He<br \/>\n  couldn?t come to Rome now because he had to go to Jerusalem with the gift from<br \/>\n  the Macedonians. (Rom 15:22-29)<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Were there other<br \/>\n  circumstances that kept Paul from going to Rome before now?<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Phoebe<br \/>\n  (A Deaconess from Cenchrea) was on her way to Rome so Paul took his opportunity<br \/>\n  (while at Corinth) to write the letter (16:1; 2)<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Very likely she<br \/>\n  delivered the letter.<\/p>\n<p>c)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>To<br \/>\n  impart some teaching in letter form since he hasn?t visited physically yet.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>The<br \/>\n  Bondservant of Jesus Christ.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>a.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>Doulos<\/p>\n<p>1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>The<br \/>\n  most abject form of slave<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Form<br \/>\n  one is of person who is caught\/captured during a war and forced to be a slave.<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Form<br \/>\n  two the slave is Born into the life of slavery (aka service)?this is the word<br \/>\n  as used here.<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>The same word is<br \/>\n  used for Christ (Phil. 2:7)<\/p>\n<p>2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Having<br \/>\n  no will but the will of the master<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>No<br \/>\n  thought but that of the master<\/p>\n<p>3)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Making<br \/>\n  no move but with the masters approval.<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>The<br \/>\n  term ?Bondservant of the Emperor? was a term used in those days?such a slave,<br \/>\n  born into the Emperor?s home bears high honor?how much more that Paul is a Bondservant<br \/>\n  of the King of Creation and Eternity. <\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Later<br \/>\n  in Corinthians (I Cor 7:20), Paul addresses that he is a Freeman for the term<br \/>\n  ?Freeman of the Emperor? was also being used in those days. A bondservant of<br \/>\n  the Emperor declared free was an extreme honor?so Paul is both a bondservant<br \/>\n  and declared free?what a glorious honor!<\/p>\n<p>c)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Love-Slave<br \/>\n  (Ex 21:2-6) binds himself to the master for life.<\/p>\n<p>4)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Paul<br \/>\n  gets more into this in Chapter 6 but as a preview:<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>This<br \/>\n  bondservant is a slave until death parts them from the master. We were bondservants<br \/>\n  of Satan until we died in Christ and now we have been raised up (in Christ)<br \/>\n  into an eternal Kingdom of God?s Son of His Love (Col 1:30)<\/p>\n<p>5)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>A<br \/>\n  higher honor than being an apostle.<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Apostle&#8211;an<br \/>\n  Ambassador of Christ Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>A high position<br \/>\n  indeed.<\/p>\n<p>6)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>This<br \/>\n  slave of God, called to be an ambassador and set apart for this work has no<br \/>\n  shame of the good news he?s presenting to the rich or learned or philosophers<br \/>\n  or self-proposed wise-men of Rome. <\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>He<br \/>\n  knows it is the power of God unto Salvation<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>He<br \/>\n  knows that in the gospel that the Righteousness of God is revealed from faith<br \/>\n  to faith<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>From faith?beginning<br \/>\n  to end.<\/p>\n<p>(2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Righteousness in<br \/>\n  this sense not so much the inherit goodness of God but more the goodness of<br \/>\n  God towards us.<\/p>\n<p>c)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Paul<br \/>\n  makes a distinction here that it was to be presented first to the Jews then<br \/>\n  to the Gentiles<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>True this letter<br \/>\n  was written after Paul?s judgment on the Jews and his words in Acts 13:46-47<br \/>\n  sending themselves to the Gentiles?but Paul always made an effort to win Jews<br \/>\n  for Christ even when in Rome?of course there came the point in Rome as well<br \/>\n  where he called out ?Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of<br \/>\n  God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!? And when he had said<br \/>\n  these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves (Acts<br \/>\n  28:28)<\/p>\n<p><b>3.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/b><b>God?s<br \/>\n  Righteousness Revealed in Judgement (v.18)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>a.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>God?s righteousness is defended in his right to judge unrighteousness<\/p>\n<p>1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Wrath<br \/>\n  of God is seen upon all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>For<br \/>\n  suppressing the truth<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>God<br \/>\n  has shown men this fact that there is a God they should know.<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>God has made it<br \/>\n  manifest in mankind<\/p>\n<p>2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Creation<br \/>\n  and God<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Christ?s<br \/>\n  Salvation doesn?t come about from viewing creation<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>The understanding<br \/>\n  that there is a God is the result<\/p>\n<p>(a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Cause and<br \/>\n  Effect?we have Creation and Design?why? The reason must be a God of order and<br \/>\n  power.<\/p>\n<p>(b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Morality?we have<br \/>\n  a moral code within us?why? The reason must be a good God<\/p>\n<p>(c)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>We can imagine<br \/>\n  a completely Perfect Being devoid of fault and we understand that we can?t possibly<br \/>\n  attain that goal?why? The reason that we can imagine such a thing attests to<br \/>\n  it?s probable existence.<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>God?s<br \/>\n  invisible attributes clearly seen (v.20)<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Not His attributes<br \/>\n  as referring to His love, grace?but His attributes as referring to his eternal<br \/>\n  power and Godhead.<\/p>\n<p>3)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Man<br \/>\n  and God<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Man<br \/>\n  knew God<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Not in the personal<br \/>\n  sense although they did know him before the fall and before the Flood (Gen 6)<\/p>\n<p>(2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>In the sense that<br \/>\n  the Godhead Light was revealed to them?they knew God.<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Man<br \/>\n  Does Not Glorify God<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Because of man?s<br \/>\n  ungratefulness and refusal to glorify God their thinking became weak and they<br \/>\n  became morons. (v.25)<\/p>\n<p>c)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Man<br \/>\n  Glorifies the Idol (v.25)<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>God Gives Man up<br \/>\n  to Vile Passions (v.26)<\/p>\n<p>(a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>This is more<br \/>\n  than lusts?this is a focused desire?a passion has a purpose.<\/p>\n<p>i:<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Women<br \/>\n  traded in the natural usage of their bodies as did men burning up in lust for<br \/>\n  each other. Females and Females. Males and Males. Getting the penalty of their<br \/>\n  sin which they deserve (v. 26-27)<\/p>\n<p>ii:<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Participating<br \/>\n  in Homosexuality is wrong and punishable by death in OT and worthy of death<br \/>\n  in NT. (Gen 19:4-25; Lev 18:29; 20:13; Rom 1:32) Although in Corinth there were<br \/>\n  people with these tendencies they did not partake in the sin (I Cor 6:9-11)\n<\/p>\n<p>d)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Man<br \/>\n  Disapproves of God in their Thoughts (v.28)<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Man doesn?t wish<br \/>\n  to retain God in their thinking<\/p>\n<p>(a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Man wishes<br \/>\n  to remove God from the base of their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>(2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>God gives them<br \/>\n  over to a mind which is disapproved.<\/p>\n<p>(a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>God gives<br \/>\n  them over to a mind with no base.<\/p>\n<p>(b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>To do the things<br \/>\n  which are not fitting.<\/p>\n<p>i:<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>(v.29-31)<br \/>\n  A listing of things that bubble up in Man when he is unclean, a moron in his<br \/>\n  thinking, when he?s given up to his vile passions and when he?s given a debased<br \/>\n  mind.<\/p>\n<p>ii:<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>(v.32)<br \/>\n  These persons know the righteous judgment of God but keep doing what they?re<br \/>\n  doing and proud of doing this with more like they?re own kind.<\/p>\n<p>e)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>What<br \/>\n  then of the Heathen?<\/p>\n<p>(1)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>The person who<br \/>\n  has never heard of Christ?<\/p>\n<p>(a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>The Heathen<br \/>\n  is not judged so much by Christ?s death but by God?s Righteous Light?the Heathen<br \/>\n  should have known better<\/p>\n<p>(2)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>What if the heathen<br \/>\n  dies before hearing of Christ and does follow God?s Righteous Light?<\/p>\n<p>(a)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Salvation<br \/>\n  only comes through Christ?perhaps this heathen will hear the Gospel as it happened<br \/>\n  with Cornelius (Acts 10 &#8211; 11:14)<\/p>\n<p>(b)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>Some have suggested<br \/>\n  the heathen would be saved like OT Persons<\/p>\n<p>i:<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>No<br \/>\n  NT post Christ death and resurrection evidence of this.<\/p>\n<p>(3)<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp; <\/span>The Azteks and<br \/>\n  their Violent History before Cortez wiped them out.<\/p>\n<p><b>4.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Conclusion<\/b><\/p>\n<p>a.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n  <\/span>Defending of God?s Righteousness in Judgment<\/p>\n<p>b.<span style='font:7.0pt \"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>This<br \/>\n  same righteousness of God which condemns man is the same Righteousness that<br \/>\n
