\nWhat the DaVinci Code and Other Novels Don’t Tell You<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amount of Manuscripts<\/strong><\/p>\n

Greek New Testament 1514
\n<\/span>(up to this time handwritten manuscripts)<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>48 Manuscripts through first 4 centuries<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>10 and 15 manuscripts through 2nd<\/sup>
\ncentury<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>They’re all fragmentary until the 4th<\/sup>
\ncentury<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Generally they say the same thing<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>No two manuscripts agree exactly. Most mistakes
\nare easily detectable and scholars can readily dismiss. 99% of them don’t even
\naffect translation<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Geographic Evidence<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Spread out over geographic distance and no way
\ncould they be copied because of that<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Internal evidence:<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Mark 6, 7, 8 (89 verses) Jesus isn’t mentioned
\nonce by name but still center of attention. Several specific places Scribes
\nadded the word Jesus.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The problem with textual criticism is that we
\nhave 110% and trying to cut down the extras.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Marcion had a list but he was a heretic. Then
\nthe Morotorium canon came out 2\/3rd<\/sup> of the way through the 2nd<\/sup>
\ncentury. Even discussing later books that were considered orthodox though not
\nScripture.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3 Criteria for
\nCanonicity: <\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Were they written by Apostles? (Apostolicity)<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Were they Universally Accepted? (Catholicity)<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Did what the book say cohere with other books?
\n(Orthodoxy)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How do we know we
\nhave the right books in the NT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Was not immediately recognized as Scripture.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Distributed then Collected.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>At least 20 of the 27 books were always on
\northodox list.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Fringe books were questioned (2 Peter, III John,
\nJude, etc).<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Council of Nicea in 325 AD: it’s significance
\nand how it differs in what’s being put forth in those books.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>7 years before Nicea<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>—324 AD Constantine becomes sole ruler.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>—Alexander says that Jesus Christ shared same
\nessential attributes as God the Father: eternality and thus began a big battle
\nbetween Alexander and Ireneus.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>—325 AD Big discussions had: they already
\nbelieved that Jesus was already divine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fallacies:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Composite Fallacy (combining several mystery
\nreligions and saying it looks like Christianity)<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Terminological Fallacy (writing that the mystery
\nreligions talk about the same things as if they’re talking about it in the same
\nway as Christianity\u00e2\u20ac\u201die: Zombification versus Resurrection).<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Dependency Fallacy (that Christianity depends on
\nthe mystery religions but these mystery religions changed their definitions
\nafter Christianity)<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Chronological Fallacy (what’s coming first and
\nwhat’s coming later)<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Intentional Fallacy (what is the purpose of
\nthese other religions and how does it compare to Christianity).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Early Apologetics<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Justin Martyr went too far in terms of
\naccommodation but he did so to show that making Christianity illegal because of
\nX that is also in other religions was wrong.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Tertullion went too far the other way saying
\nthere was nothing familiar with Christianity in other religions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Can we trust the oral
\ntraditions?<\/strong><\/p>\n

40 years of no documentation but it doesn’t mean the time
\nwas dormant.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The gospel spread early on with extreme
\nuniformity in the gospel that was spread.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Paul says that he was speaking the same details
\nof the gospel as those in Jerusalem:
\nthe basic contours of Jesus’ life within 15 and 20 years of Jesus. He was
\npreaching the same gospel that was even later written down.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>No one doubts today that Paul wrote Galatians<\/p>\n

The Culture<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Today we have a culture that does not memorize.
\nUp to Printing Press it was all memorization. From Press to Computer was books.
\n1st<\/sup> Century AD most memorizing culture were the Jews. Strong
\nemphasis on getting down the details.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Everyone was telling the same story so that
\nthere was an oral check and balance. Continuity from end of Pentecost to end of
\nfirst century.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Bowing to Constantine?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>These people had limbs cut, nerves seared, etc
\nby the government.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>These people weren’t going to be manipulated
\ninto believing something regardless of
\n<\/span>whatever one said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Political Climate
\nof Constantinople<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Paul Meyer believes that Constantine was a genuine believer.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Roger Olson thinks Constantine was an Arian and heretic.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>A very different world from the one we’re living
\nin today.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why there is a need to
\nknow these things<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a need for people to understand that the originals
\nare reliable. 20 years ago you could easily argue against Holy Blood and Holy
\nGrail if you understand the basic historical foundations of your faith. It is
\nalso the best way for you to be prepared with people. We must understand that
\nthere is a historical core to the gospel and Christianity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

People didn’t always go to this convenient quip: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that’s just
\nyour interpretation\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which intimates that all interpretations are created
\nequal.<\/p>\n

The Incarnation, the idea that God entered space time and
\nhistory, demands that we look at the gospel historical as well as the doctrines
\nand documents. We find ourselves caught off guard when something like the
\nDaVinci Code comes around but it took us a couple of years to get caught up on
\nthose types of things. There is something wrong when the basic historical background
\nof these things has been so ignored at the pulpit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What was Constantine’s
\nRole During the Council of Nicea?<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Vantage Point 1: The Bishops who had assembled
\nthere to discuss the level of Christ’s divinity had been undergoing (for years)
\nsevere persecutions. These bishops wouldn’t recant or change their minds; they
\nwould die before getting bullied. They left the Council of Nicea and functioned
\nin Pastoral roles. It was not only the Bishops but they were going to preach in
\ntheir communities and the Christian community would decide.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Vantage Point 2: There is no way historically to
\nget to the idea that Constantine
\nhad any real influence save gathering the group together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Eerdman? Believer or not?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>He is a confessed agnostic who recently has
\ntaken a turn in his textual criticism that states we can’t know the historicity
\nof the biblical text\u00e2\u20ac\u201da position that many textual critics don’t align with.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Comparing the Movie to
\nthe Book<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Things were softened in the movie compared to
\nthe book since even liberal scholars (Robert
\nPrice who doesn’t even believe Jesus Christ existed) tore into the factual
\nerrors of the book. Bart Eerdman wrote a book about the DaVinci code pointing
\nout the nonsensical thing.<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153One Liberals and Conservatives agree on
\nsomething that deals with Christianity; it’s probably true\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Movie couldn’t live up to the hype to
\neverything before it. As a result there were many negative reviews in the West.
\nThe DaVinci hype took a nose dive. The movie let the air out of the balloon but
\nit did awaken people to a desire to discuss things about Christian Origins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
