Several specific places Scribes<br \/>\nadded the word Jesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The problem with textual criticism is that we<br \/>\nhave 110% and trying to cut down the extras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Marcion had a list but he was a heretic. Then<br \/>\nthe Morotorium canon came out 2\/3<sup>rd<\/sup> of the way through the 2<sup>nd<\/sup><br \/>\ncentury. Even discussing later books that were considered orthodox though not<br \/>\nScripture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <strong>3 Criteria for<br \/>\nCanonicity: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Were they written by Apostles? font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Did what the book say cohere with other books?<br \/>\n(Orthodoxy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <strong>How do we know we<br \/>\nhave the right books in the NT?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Justin Martyr went too far in terms of<br \/>\naccommodation but he did so to show that making Christianity illegal because of<br \/>\nX that is also in other religions was wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Tertullion went too far the other way saying<br \/>\nthere was nothing familiar with Christianity in other religions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <strong>Can we trust the oral<br \/>\ntraditions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> 40 years of no documentation but it doesn&#8217;t mean the time<br \/>\nwas dormant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The gospel spread early on with extreme<br \/>\nuniformity in the gospel that was spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Paul says that he was speaking the same details<br \/>\nof the gospel as those in Jerusalem:<br \/>\nthe basic contours of Jesus&#8217; life within 15 and 20 years of Jesus. He was<br \/>\npreaching the same gospel that was even later written down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->No one doubts today that Paul wrote Galatians<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> The Culture<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Today we have a culture that does not memorize.<br \/>\nUp to Printing Press it was all memorization. From Press to Computer was books.<br \/>\n1<sup>st<\/sup> Century AD most memorizing culture were the Jews. Strong<br \/>\nemphasis on getting down the details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Everyone was telling the same story so that<br \/>\nthere was an oral check and balance. Continuity from end of Pentecost to end of<br \/>\nfirst century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <strong>Bowing to Constantine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->These people had limbs cut, nerves seared, etc<br \/>\nby the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->These people weren&#8217;t going to be manipulated<br \/>\ninto believing something regardless of<span><br \/>\n<\/span>whatever one said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\"> <strong>The Political Climate<br \/>\nof Constantinople<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Paul Meyer believes that Constantine was a genuine believer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Roger Olson thinks Constantine was an Arian and heretic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->A very different world from the one we&#8217;re living<br \/>\nin today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\"> <strong>Why there is a need to<br \/>\nknow these things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\"> There is a need for people to understand that the originals<br \/>\nare reliable. 20 years ago you could easily argue against Holy Blood and Holy<br \/>\nGrail if you understand the basic historical foundations of your faith. It is<br \/>\nalso the best way for you to be prepared with people. We must understand that<br \/>\nthere is a historical core to the gospel and Christianity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0pt; text-indent: 0pt\" class=\"BulletedList\"> People didn&#8217;t always go to this convenient quip: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that&#8217;s just<br \/>\nyour interpretation\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which intimates that all interpretations are created<br \/>\nequal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> The Incarnation, the idea that God entered space time and<br \/>\nhistory, demands that we look at the gospel historical as well as the doctrines<br \/>\nand documents. We find ourselves caught off guard when something like the<br \/>\nDaVinci Code comes around but it took us a couple of years to get caught up on<br \/>\nthose types of things. There is something wrong when the basic historical background<br \/>\nof these things has been so ignored at the pulpit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> What was Constantine&#8217;s<br \/>\nRole During the Council of Nicea?<\/p>\n<p class=\"BulletedList\"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span>\u00c2\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Vantage Point 1: The Bishops who had assembled<br \/>\nthere to discuss the level of Christ&#8217;s divinity had been undergoing (for years)<br \/>\nsevere persecutions. These bishops wouldn&#8217;t recant or change their minds; they<br \/>\nwould die before getting bullied. They left the Council of Nicea and functioned<br \/>\nin Pastoral roles. As a result there were many negative reviews in the West.<br \/>\nThe DaVinci hype took a nose dive.
