Stop Method Illustrated -tmp(Jude 1)

Doug suggested that I walk through the STOP method so anyone who wants to can see it in action—he makes a valid point. It’s hard just reading about a method without actually doing it with a person (and that’s why when I did the seminar at our gathering I made sure to actually go through a chapter doing the method). What I’m going to do is take the letter of Jude and show the STOP method in action.

Now, remember, we’re to be steadfast about this, so although you’re going to see an entire chart I went through and read the chapter one time per question (a total of three times) for the actual study. I targeted for getting an answer to any of the three questions—didn’t matter which (and I was overjoyed that I actually got answers for all three). I read through the verses in an orderly fashion, my note-taking device at ready, and only popping one of the three GO-questions in my head then stopping and writing down an answer if the question seemed to be answered.

The chart you’re going to see is divided in two columns. The left is the text (NASB) and the right is the STOP questions. See it in action on the subsequent chart.

What you see above is how the questions are going to be answered. Wherever I didn’t find an answer to a question I left it blank. In some cases, I would leave the verse blank because the actual verse wasn’t yielding an answer because it might have been part of a longer sentence. At the end of the copy block, I would probably find an answer.

You’ll also note that in some cases there are some major things being ignored. What did the angels do? Who is Michael? Are the last days following a dispensational timeline, following an amillenial illustration or a postmillennial structure? When are “the called” actually “called”? Those questions are ignored because that is not the point of this particular method. Those questions might be answered in other methods but for this particular method we’re trying to get three basic questions answered. If later in life they lead to deeper study, praise the Lord.

Chapter Popping Questions
The single verse Question 1) What does it teach me about God’s Person? (Who He is)
Question 2) What does it teach me about God’s Plan for His People? (What does He want)
Question 3) What does it teach me about God’s Purposes? (What is He doing)
Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: (Jud 1:1) Jesus is the Christ (which is the Messiah)God is The Father

God sanctifies

Jesus Christ preserves

God’s plan is to sanctify and preserve “those who are called” in Jesus Christ
Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.(Jud 1:2)
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.(Jud 1:3)
God’s people are to contend earnestly for the faith
God delivered “the faith” once and for all to the saints
For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.(Jud 1:4) There is a grace that belongs to GodThere is only one Lord God

Jesus Christ is also Lord

The Lord Jesus Christ and the Lord God are equated

God has marked certain men, ungodly men (who currently creep in unnoticed) for condemnation
But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.(Jud 1:5)
God’s people are to believe, trusting God
God saves people, but afterwards destroys those who do not believe
And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;(Jud 1:6)
God reserves for judgment “angels who did not keep their proper domain”
as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.(Jud 1:7)
God’s people are not to be given over to sexual immorality or going after the flesh
God has set forth Sodom and Gomorrah as an example
Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.(Jud 1:8)
God’s people are not to speak evil of dignitaries
Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”(Jud 1:9)
But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.(Jud 1:10)
God’s people are to be prudent with their words, not speaking of what they do not know
Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.(Jud 1:11)
These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about [3] by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;(Jud 1:12)
raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.(Jud 1:13)
These certain men, who have “gone in the way of Cain”, have gone in the “error of Balaam” and have perished in “the rebellion of Korah” the blackness of darkness is reserved forever.
Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints,(Jud 1:14)
to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”(Jud 1:15)
The Lord is coming to judge these men with His saintsThe Lord is coming to convict all who are ungodly

The Lord is coming to answer the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him

These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.(Jud 1:16)
God’s people are not to be grumblers or complainersGod’s people are not to walk according to their own lusts

God’s people must keep their mouths humble.

But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:(Jud 1:17) The Lord Jesus Christ had apostles
God’s people are to remember the words spoken by the apostles.
how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.(Jud 1:18)
God’s people are to remember that the apostles spoke of mockers in the “last time”
There is a“last time”
These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.(Jud 1:19) God is SpiritA Person can have this Spirit
God’s people should know that these sensual persons do not have the Spirit
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,(Jud 1:20)
God’s people are to build themselves up on their holy faith and trustGod’s people are to do this, praying in the Holy Spirit
keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.(Jud 1:21) God has loveThe Lord Jesus Christ has mercy
God’s people are to keep themselves in the love of GodGod’s people are to be looking for the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life
Jesus Christ will show mercy unto eternal life.
And on some have compassion, making a distinction;(Jud 1:22)
God’s people are to be discerning and having compassion
but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.(Jud 1:23)
God’s people are to save others with fear
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,(Jud 1:24) God has gloryGod keeps people
He is to present believers as faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy
To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.(Jud 1:25) God is our savior. God alone is wiseGlory, Majesty, Dominion and Power all belong to God
