Russ on Perseverance

Believe it or not, this post is near the 1,000 word maximum
(woo hoo!!!). Since most of us will agree on this one (I haven’t seen too many
Arminians involved in our discussions, so this should draw them out if they are
out there), I’ll forego the beginning joke…just the fact that I’m staying in my
word limit should make you smile :) .

Russ On Monday

Brother Russ will be giving us the next part of his TULIPS
series, this time taking a look at Perseverance of the Saints! It’s been a
great series so far and there has been a fair amount of discussion spilling on to this
brother’s site
. Read on or pitch in!

Late Saturday Rant and Links

I’m in the process of redesigning my personal site and I’ll have you
know that ‘CSS only’ is ridiculously annoying. There are so many
factors to consider, duplicated by the fact that I don’t want it to
look like a blog. Tim Challies does a bang up job of working in css,
doubling my respect for his design skills. But for all those anti-table
fanatics out there…sorry guys but I’m thinking that I’m going to design
my personal site with some tables. There is a marginal difference in
actual load time and I am working under tight constraints.

Original Sin

Well, since I can’t comment on Tim’s site from my home
(probably because he got attacked by a spammer with my ip-range or something)
I’ll leave a comment here on the Archive.

On Marriage For Robert

I find it extremely difficult to comment on your personal situation
without knowing the full details nor am I asking for them. Those
details are between you, your wife and the Lord unless you seek Godly
counsel. Any response I give will be generic at best, prayerfully
founded on Scripture and God willing, beneficial to your situation.
Please understand that if I do make a suggestion it may not be the
specific answer to your need, but I will rely on the Lord to direct my
thoughts.

We came up against the apparent wall of {{Acts 2:38}} where
Peter is demanding that the crowd be baptized in order to receive
forgiveness of sin. Rory’s point which spurred the discussion seems to stand. Is
this proof of baptismal regeneration (with new meaning to {{Ephesians 4}})…even
though the rest of our study seemed to contradict this?

Baptism and Big Problems

In our last post we touched on a few things. Namely, that
before Christianity there were ceremonial baptisms, or washings, of the Old
Testament and the baptism of John. We looked at John’s purpose in baptism and
we looked at what the people did as they went to get baptized. We also mentioned
some baptisms brought by Christ—one with the Holy Spirit and one with fire. Lastly,
we managed to begin to see what role water played in the giving of the Holy
Spirit in the book of Acts. Today, we start to encounter problems…

Announcing Voices For Christ

I am proud to announce Voices For Christ, an online resource
offering sermons in a digital audio format and partially re-mastered for your
listening pleasure. My role in the project has been immensely small but a
certain Dwight Beavers has spent countless hours doing the conversion and
re-mastering. Many of the speakers are Brethren and you may recognize some of
the speakers but if anything, it is quite the resource. I like to listen to the
Bible or Preaching when I’m driving in the car. With the investment of a cheap
30 dollar mp3 player I can fit about 100 messages on a single cd! This site lets
you download the audios for free or compile a cd and they’ll burn it for you. The
library may change per month due to bandwidth issues, but there you go…the
Voices For Christ! I put them under Brethren resources.

Russ on Irresistible Grace

Rather than starting every article with a joke, I decided to
use a real life story which, often times, can be funnier than any joke.

I have a three year old son whose chief delight is playing
in either dirt or mud. So much so, that we have needed to place limitations on
his mud-playing. For instance, since we generally don’t allow him to play
outside when it is wet and rainy, he found that he needed a source of water for
his mud-making. So, he would often find a bucket, turn on the faucet that is
outside our house, fill the bucket and go off to his mud-making. Of course,
once his use for the faucet was over, it was forgotten, and rather than
shutting it off, within a short amount of time we would have gallons of water
flowing down our driveway. To remedy this, we placed rather strict parameters
on the use of the outside faucet (i.e. NO usage except with Dad or Mom’s
permission)…

Dark Confession

So I’ve got this backend manager that makes links to the ESV
Bible to make references easier to look up for folk. The script was made
available by one of the professional mambrothers and it is based on
Scripturizer from Scott Yang. Now, my dark admission…

One Baptism Versus the Many?

Last time we discussed baptism we offered up brother Rory’s
contention that salvation is impossible without the rite of baptism. One of the
texts he used in support of this baptism being salvific was {{Ephesians 4:4-5}}
illustrating this point of One baptism being for the forgiveness of sins. My
first post started to question the usage {{Ephesians 4[NASB]}} as this defense and in
this post I will explore the different baptisms mentioned in Scripture.

The movie was amazing. You should probably read no further
if you don’t want to be ruined by my outright plot spoilers, repeated bursts
of praise, my adulations of worthiness and some Scriptural illumination so I’ll
contain my glee and let all three of you readers decide to either click on the
Happy Husband
or come in. Honestly there will be spoilers so don’t click if you
haven’t seen the movie.
