Speaking Hands

Two expressive hands, punctuating sentences with either callous, dismissive waves or dour, exasperated shrugs. That’s what I remember about my recent exchanges with friends of mine. Somehow the conversation turns to the benefits of this preached sermon or a visit to a recent church and of their own volition, like lawyers in court shouting “objection!”, my hands are up and waving.

Based on a True Story

A good introduction is like a good pair of shoes: when it fits it’ll go a long way. On the big screen, right after the title credits you see that line and automatically you start expecting historical fiction. Oh you’ll easily acknowledge what parts are fact (like the Revolution, or the signing of documents) and which parts are fiction (the messy love triangle maybe) but in the end you come out thinking you’ve actually seen a bit of history, Hollywood style. Well, maybe we’re not all that naïve-but do we ever go back and research the facts from the false?

Dispelling Disappearance Rumors

Just wanted to dispel some rumors about my absence. I was NOT caught up into the third heaven (only to find out that I’ve got everything wrong). I was NOT caught up in a liberal and postmodern branch of the Plymouth Brethren (who believe in wearing black head coverings instead of white ::gasp::). Neither was I raptured leaving the rest of you behind.

I’m still here. Working on my kids, life, job, yard and posts. Posting will resume shortly.

What Sort Of Teacher Am I?

What sort of teacher am I? Every now and then I get in a black funk where I start reexamining my motives or questioning any gift the Lord has granted or checking the barometric pressure of my big head and I sit off to the side, somberly reflecting. Maybe its that I’m tired (two kids plus one newborn can do that) or maybe its that I’m in a new area where my ministry has changed from working with urban minority teens and college age folk to working mostly with rural, white over-sixty year olds that’s causing this reflection. I don’t know what’s causing it but this time I decided to write it down.

I finished Harry Potter and it was awesome. On my other blog, I wrote a short post on it but here I want to put down some thoughts (with tons of spoilers) I’ve had banging around my head for the last week. Once again, I AM going to post spoilers with wild and callous abandon so you’ve been duly warned.

Do The Evolution

Evolution is a funny word that gets bandied about. Saying it in different context evokes different responses, sometimes laughter and sometimes justified anger. In fact, I’ve been in conversations where a person is using evolution in one sense and me in a completely different sense and both of us have gotten riled up until we pinned down our terms.

Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen?

Virginia Tech…32 dead: why? The question that always comes up after something like this is: how can there be a good God if there is so much evil in the world? How come he doesn’t stop it right now?

God Made Me This Way: How Is It Sin?

“How can It be wrong if God made me this way?” That was the quote from a recent Law and Order Special Victim’s Unit where a gay Christian young man realized that his pastor father had killed his lover. The young man was part of an extremist group of Christians who performed plays depicting sinners screaming and burning in hell. But his question got me thinking: was he on point?

Rey’s Baby Three

What have I been up to? Nothing besides running around with two kids and the third on his (or her?we’re not finding out the sex) way. Here’s Week 19 Sonogram.

Say It With Me: Propitiation

Rebecca has a post looking at the word propitiation, its usage and a challenge to figure out another word that can fit in its place. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your bend in modern bible translations) I’m all for the actual word propitiation but I also readily admit that there might be a shift of usage depending on the Biblical author. Paul might be making an allusion to the OT mercy seat and John may be referring to what the mercy seat offering accomplished in a general sense. So whereas Paul might be saying "God publicly (instead of behind a veil) revealed the place where God’s wrath was turned away and satisfied in the person of His Son on the cross" John would be saying "Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for the world, but for us believers especially."

Be that as it may, I’ll play and try to update (if not dumb down) the actual word.

Mohler (HT: Tim–>Links Below) tells parents to be careful with television and children by first showing an excerpt from recent research showing a statistical relationship with autism and television viewing. People, don’t get me wrong—kids shouldn’t be spending hours in front of the TV, but honestly—Christians, just because you read a bit of research don’t immediately wave it as your banner!

The Responsibility of Family Blogging

If there’s a blog there’s an opinion. If there’s
an opposing opinion there is an extreme. It’s the nature of blogging.
Extreme liberals versus Extreme Conservatives. Hyper Atheists versus
Biblical Extremists. It gets pretty darn annoying when those polar
opposites are so blind to everything else that they wind up being a
travesty of their position. One of these that come to the fore in my
immediate thinking because of their extreme irresponsibility are Family
Blogs.

I Would Rather Die…

Samurai (bushi), Ancient Japan’s military elite, would
rather die in battle than get caught and bring dishonor to their master. In
some cases, this death would come by their own sword by performing seppuku, a
ritual suicide by means of cutting the abdomen not reserved for the Battlefield
but not restricted from it either. The Samurai, while following the Bushido, lead
a life of respect, honor, loyalty and ethical conduct so falling on their sword
was a sign of extreme honor. Or so they said. They were people after all and
sometimes people get funny.

Today is 6/6/6 so I figured I’d write a post pointing out who is the anti-Christ, with a countdown to the 2nd coming. Some Covenant Theologians out there would actually believe that I would do that since I’m a wild-eyed fanatical dispensationalist who just doesn’t see the structure of the Bible. Absurd. Allow me to rant for a second:
