Types of Christ in the OT: Aaron

While no spiritual mind has any difficulty seeing in Aaron a type of Christ as our Great High Priest, occupation with the larger symbolic picture sometimes causes us to miss the equally beautiful miniatures presented in the details of the larger portrait. Aaron on the Day of Atonement is one such miniature (Le 16).

In Le 16:1 we have a reference to the death of Aaron’s two sons for having acted without a divine command, reminding us of the awesome holiness of God. This is the context for the instructions that follow, ?Speak unto Aaron … that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail … that he die not…. Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place…. He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen miter shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on,? vv.2-4.

True Worship of God

I was recently reintroduced to the differences in worship in the New Testament, and have been left astounded. I was struck by the contrast of these definitions and my younger perceptions.

When I was a child I looked at worship as a meeting where I could catch up on sleep if need be, but mostly a time of extreme boredom. When I was older, I looked at worship as an action done by certain men, and still the clock was studiously watched. Today I see some other aspects of worship, which I hope to share with you) and I understand my learning is not over.

It is not my goal to try to teach anyone what worship is, for many have been in the Lord much longer than myself, and you all have studied the passages and bring your fruits to the Lord every Sunday. No, my goal is simply to share how my view has changed in light of what the New Testament says about worship.

Indeed, it has been said we will spend eternity worshipping God. Right off the bat, my younger self would have shuddered at the looming eternal boredom (I speak as a fool), and my slightly older self would wonder if he would be spending eternity on the sidelines while such giants as Paul, Timothy, Peter, John and many of yourselves stand up to offer the worship due to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is above all, forever and ever. Amen.

A Political Rant, Sort Of

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that our constitution guarantees consenting adults the right to perform pretty much any sexual act they can physically accommodate. Shortly after that ruling, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that nothing in the state constitution prevented a legally binding marriage between two people of the same sex. Throughout everything, there has been a movement among religious and political conservatives to add an amendment to the U.S. Constitution defining marriage as “the union of a man and a woman.” I have avoided the topic here because it is a political powder keg, and to discuss it would be to veer slightly away from my stated purpose of celebrating marriage. But I figure I can weigh in once.

Corporate Worship

In traveling among the assemblies of God?s people, one has noted
that there appears to be a growing loss of focus in many assembly worship meetings, with
many not being aware of just why they are there, and what is expected from them, so
perhaps it would be helpful to review what we find in Scripture regarding worship and
worshippers. Let us examine a few distinctives, that may help us to appreciate what
worship is, and what is expected from us when we come together to function as a Holy
Priesthood.

The Person of Christ As Revealed in the Gospel of Matthew

The first four chapters of the first Gospel yield quite a complex view
of our Lord. In the first chapter, He is spoken of as the Son of David, the Messiah; also
as the Son of Abraham, the Seed in Whom all the nations of the world are to be blessed.
This term also suggests the family of faith. “They which are of faith, the
same are the children of Abraham” (Gal. 3:7). He is also the Son of the virgin,
suggesting the promised “Seed of the woman,” and declaring His miraculous birth,
His sinless nature, and the fact that He was not in Adam. He thus inherited no sin, nor
did death have any claim upon Him. This Son of the virgin is the One foretold by the
prophet as Immanuel, “God with us,” which declares His Godhead. The name
actually given to Him in fulfillment of this prophecy, is full of significance – Jesus,
“Jehovah the Savior.” Jehovah, the name of the covenant–God of Israel,
revealed in connection with the redemption out of Egypt, by its form seems to point
forward to the future — the letter yodh being a sign of the future. That name
therefore was the pledge that there should come the true covenant–Redeemer, who
should save His people from their sins.
