It’s so very easy to get lost in the problems of everyday, external and internal. I mean, you can turn on your tv set or radio or open up a newspaper and you’re inundated by the worst things happening all around. Sometimes I look at the sin in my own life and dive head long into one of my infamous ?Black Funks? where I mope with furrowed brows and become, specifically, a bore.
There are those times in my life, and perhaps yours, where I focus on the darkness and my eyes start to get used to that darkness. I may even grow proud with my recognition of what is in the darkness and wind up getting too close?perhaps you find something similar in your life.
Helen Lemmel?s song “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” makes us look at the Lord Jesus Christ, the very brightness of God?s glory, shining out in the darkness and piercing our eyes. Staring into his awesome brightness and glory and the love found in Him the things in the darkness start to grow dim?not becoming our focus but obstacles on the road towards Christ.
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There?s a light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
Over us sin no more hath dominion?
For more than conquerors we are!
His Word shall not fail you?He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!
