1988. The fourth edition
does include a major update (a carry over from the third edition)—an entire section on post-modernism and if
you’re looking to read a copy of the book that would be the one.
“Mary and Joseph were strong and didn’t have to give in to
their human urges.” said my friend some time ago when we were talking about
Mary’s supposed perpetual virginity. What struck me about this thought was that
it drew an ethical line without meaning to. Is it right, though?
Apparently I wrote this last post so badly that some folk took issue with it
and thought I was bashing scholars. This post is written mostly to
explain the last post, since apparently I asked the question so
horrendously that people thought I was raising the anti-intellectual
banner.
I don’t like the term “Anti-Intellectual”. It seems to say that whoever
is “anti-intellectual” embraces being dumb. I wonder if the term
should be anti-scholarship…since that seems to be the mindset. Be that
as it may, some have raised concerns about Biblical anti-intellectualism…but
why? What do they want?

Begin Transmission: When we study the Bible let’s make sure to do it systematically—finding out all that the Scriptures have to say on a subject and deducting our conclusion. In fact, you can even start the process by thinking about the attributes of God then finding out how the Scriptures fits into your thinking.
